Om en bok av Sorokin

Denna bok är en sådan bok som borde ha fått mera uppmärksamhet. Jag tror inte ens att den har blivit översatt till svenska. Man kan undra hur många viktiga böcker på andra språk som våra svenska bokförlag inte gitter ge ut på svenska. Nå, Pitirim A. Sorokin gav ut "The basic trends of our times" 1964 och den gick nästan spårlöst förbi här.

Boken består av fem avdelningar: "Three basic trends of our time", "Diagnosis and prognosis of East-West relationships", "Mutual convergence of the United States and the U.S.S.R. to the mixed sociocultural type", "Religious and moral polarization of our time" och "The mysterious energy of love".

De tre grundläggande trenderna i vår tid (d.v.s. vid 1960-talets mitt) var enligt Sorokin
* en förflyttning av det kreativa ledarskapet i världen från Europa till ett större område vid Stilla havet och Atlanten, särskilt Amerika, Asien och Afrika
* "a continued disintegration of the hitherto predominant sensate man, culture, society, and system of values"
* "the emergence and slow growth of the first components of a new - integral - order, system of values, and type of personality" (s. 13)

I bokens första del berör Sorokin "kreativ altruism" - ett begrepp som är starkt förenat med hans namn.
"(...) a minimum of unselfish love is absolutely necessary for the continuing existence of any society (...) an increased altruization of individuals and groups and extension of unselfish love in everyone are a necessary condition for the prevention of new wars and for the liberation of mankind from its gravest ills: bloody conflicts, crime, insanity, misery, and cussedness." (s. 41)

Är det någon mer än jag som kommer att tänka på "Peace, love and understanding" eller "All you need is love"? Och detta alltså några år före Woodstockfestivalen och Beatles' låt.

"(...) man's constructive creativity has been and is the most important factor in the survival of the Homo sapiens species, of its elevation over all other species (...)" (s. 73) - hävdade han i andra delen.

När det sedan gällde skillnader och likheter mellan USA och Sovjetunionen - beskrivna i tredje delen - poängterade Sorokin:
"(...) both countries are moving toward a similar type of interpersonal and intergroup relationships of a predominantly familistic character in various degrees of purity and extension." (s. 121)

"For the present and immediate future all religious and moral forces must exert their utmost influence to prevent the new world war and other bloody conflicts." (s. 152)

Så skrev han i fjärde delen. Vi sitter med facit i hand. Ett tredje världskrig blev det inte - men blodiga konflikter.

I femte och sista delen handlar det om den mystiska energi som gömmer sig i kärleken.
"(...) altrustic love means the specific behavior of living forms striving - instinctively or consciously - to be helpful to other organisms." (s. 165)

"Love not only cures and revitalizes the individual's mind and organism but also proves itself to be the decisive factor of the vital, mental, moral and social well-being and growth of an individual." (s. 177)

"Like other forms of energy, love-energy can also be accumulated or stored a) in individuals, b) in social institutions, and c) in culture." (s. 202)
